5 KPIs Every Ecommerce Marketer Should Watch

July 18, 2026 · 5 items · 2 min read

Five ecommerce marketing KPIs to watch: ROAS, conversion rate, and cart metrics

Clicks alone won’t tell you if ads are working. Watch these five numbers together and you’ll see much more clearly whether your spend is paying off.

  1. 1

ROAS — return on ad spend

Shows how much revenue you get for every 1 unit of ad spend. A ROAS of 3 means 1 spent returned 3 in sales. That is not profit by itself—factor in product cost and returns.

    ROAS

  2. 2

    Cart abandonment rate

Shows how often people add to cart and leave without paying. High rates often mean surprise shipping fees, long forms, or too few payment options. Small fixes here can improve results quickly.

    CRO

  3. 3

    AOV — average order value

Shows how much a customer spends per order on average. Higher AOV with the same traffic makes ad costs easier to cover. Bundles and free-shipping thresholds help.

    Revenue

  4. 4

    Conversion rate

Shows how many of every 100 visitors buy. Strong traffic with weak sales often points to the product page, price, or checkout. When this drops, ad return usually worsens too.

    Conversion Rate

  5. 5

    CAC — customer acquisition cost

Shows what you spend on average to win one new customer. If that cost exceeds long-term customer value, scaling loses money. Check this balance before growing budget.

Example scenario

Problem

You spend more on ads each month but sales don’t rise at the same rate. The dashboard only shows clicks and spend—so it’s unclear which ads actually drive sales. Cart abandoners, average order value, and cost per customer are ignored. Money goes to the wrong places and problems are spotted late.

What should a digital marketer do?

Every week watch these five numbers: ROAS, cart abandonment, AOV, conversion rate, and CAC. Put more budget behind products and channels that sell. Fix low-return areas first, then scale spend. Spend smarter—not just more.
