UTM Source/Medium

UTM Source/Medium is the combination of UTM parameters used to tag which source, such as Google or Instagram, and which medium type, such as organic, paid, or email, a website's traffic came from.

Detailed explanation

The source parameter identifies the platform the traffic came from (google, facebook, newsletter, etc.), while the medium parameter identifies the nature of that traffic (organic, cpc, email, referral, etc.); together, they're the most commonly used dimension pair in analytics reports.

If this tagging isn't done consistently, the same source can appear as multiple rows with different spellings (Google, google, GOOGLE), which complicates reporting; that's why teams typically establish a UTM naming standard.

Correctly tagged source/medium data is the foundational data source for seeing which channel actually drives conversions and for directing budget accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Why are UTM source and medium parameters used together?
Source shows the platform the traffic came from, while medium shows the nature of that traffic; together they enable accurate breakdown of channel performance.
Why does a UTM naming standard matter?
Inconsistent spelling can cause the same source to appear as multiple rows in reports and lead to the data being misread.
