View

A View is recorded when a piece of content — most often a video or display ad — is actually watched or seen by a user.

Detailed explanation

A View is the metric used to indicate that content, most commonly video, was actually watched rather than merely served. Different platforms define the threshold for counting a view differently: some count it after a few seconds of playback, others require the user to reach a certain percentage of completion (25%, 50%, or 100%), and social platforms often set their own specific standards, so a "view" on one platform is not always directly comparable to a "view" on another.

Because of these platform-specific definitions, views are best interpreted alongside completion rate and view-through rate rather than as a single universal number. A video with a large view count but a low completion rate suggests the opening seconds are not holding attention, while a smaller view count with high completion suggests the content resonates strongly with the audience it does reach.

Views sit conceptually between impressions and clicks: an impression only confirms an ad was served, a click confirms an explicit action, and a view sits in between, confirming genuine (if often passive) attention was paid to the content for at least a defined amount of time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a View?
A recorded instance of a piece of content, typically video, actually being watched or seen by a user, rather than just being served.
How is a View counted?
It varies by platform — some count a view after a few seconds of playback, others require reaching a set percentage of the content's total length.
Why should Views be read together with completion rate?
A high view count with a low completion rate signals that viewers are dropping off early, while completion rate shows whether the content actually holds attention through to the end.
